Opinel No.08 Carbon Steel Folding Knife with Faux-Leather Sheath – Varnished Beech Handle Gift Set in Wooden Box

Bought this as a Father's Day gift for my dad and he was genuinely moved. The wooden box makes it feel special, the knife itself is a classic No.08 with a lovely varnished beech handle, and the sheath fits well. Dad carries it on every dog walk now. Carbon steel gets a nice patina — he says it has 'character.'

Carbon steel Opinels are known for edge quality and this one lives up to it. Sliced through cardboard, apples, and some whittling without skipping a beat. Just remember to wipe it down after use and oil it occasionally — it will rust if you're lazy. That's the tradeoff and it's worth it.

No complaints about the knife at all — classic Opinel, sharp, light, beautiful handle. The faux-leather sheath is serviceable but feels a bit plasticky. The wooden gift box is actually quite nice. Overall still a great value at 50% off.

I know carbon steel patinas, but mine spotted within the first week of cutting fruit. It doesn't affect performance and some people love the look, just be aware if you're expecting stainless. Knife action and sharpness are great. Lowered rating only because I wasn't mentally prepared for the maintenance.

I'm careful with my tools and wiped this down after every use, but a rust bloom still appeared near the pivot where I apparently missed moisture. Had to scrub it back and re-oil. Maybe I got a lemon, but I'd suggest stainless for anyone who doesn't want to babysit their knife. The sheath and box are nice though.
