Took this out on my first chanterelle hunt of the season and it was exactly what I needed. The curved blade slides under the stem cleanly without tearing the mycelium, and the serrated scraper brushes dirt off right there in the woods instead of carrying grit home. Slips easily into a jacket pocket and the lock feels solid. Honestly can't believe this was only $17.
Second chance means second chance — mine had a few light scratches on the beechwood handle and the blade edge isn't quite factory-perfect. But it's sharp, the curve is ideal for mushrooms, and it performs just as well as my friend's full-price one. No complaints for the price.
I've been foraging porcini and hedgehogs for about six years now and have cycled through a few dedicated mushroom knives. This is the first one where the serrated scraper actually gets used every single time — it cleans stems and caps before anything goes in the bag, which keeps my harvest cleaner and my kitchen happier. The curved blade cuts flush to the ground, the lock ring is smooth once broken in, and the whole thing weighs almost nothing. Bought a second one as a gift. Would happily pay full price for it, so at the discount it's a steal.
Nice compact knife for mushroom hikes. The curved blade is great for clean cuts, and the brush/scraper is handy. Took one star off because it took a bit of effort to get the hinge working smoothly out of the box, but after a drop of oil it's fine.
Works fine for small and medium mushrooms. The blade is a bit shorter than I pictured, so big boletes are awkward. Still decent quality for the price.
Sharp, light, perfect for fungi. Very happy.
The stainless steel holds an edge through a full afternoon of cutting, and I love that I can wipe the blade clean without worrying about rust. The second-chance blemish on mine is barely noticeable. A great entry knife for anyone getting into foraging.
The curve and scraper are nice, but mine came noticeably duller than any other Opinel I've owned. I sharpened it myself and now it's fine, but for a mushroom knife that's supposed to cut delicate stems, it shouldn't need touching up on day one. Maybe I got a bad second-chance batch.
