Opinel Maintenance Oil is a plant-based, food-safe lubricating oil made to protect every knife in your Opinel collection. It is the right pick for knife owners who want to stop rust on carbon steel blades, keep folding knives opening smoothly, and condition beechwood handles and cutting boards. At just $10 at Cutter's Bench, this is the most affordable way to extend the life of knives that cost far more than this bottle.
Yes. The oil is plant-based and food safe, so it is approved for contact with blades and surfaces that touch food. That makes it the correct choice over household machine oils, which are not food safe.
After cleaning and drying your knife with a soft, dry cloth, apply a few drops of oil to a clean cloth and rub it on the blade. On carbon steel knives, a thin oil film is your primary defense against rust and patina. Allow the blade of a folding knife to dry completely before closing it.
Apply a few drops of oil to a cloth and rub it evenly into wooden handles to condition the wood, prevent drying and cracking, and deepen the finish. The same technique works on cutting boards.
Yes. When applied regularly, the oil creates a protective barrier that repels moisture and slows rust formation on carbon steel blades and the steel components of folding mechanisms.
Safe for the full range of Opinel knives, including carbon steel and stainless steel folding knives, kitchen knives, and all beechwood handles. Also suitable for other brands' carbon blades and wooden cutting boards.

Yes. Rub a few drops into beechwood handles or cutting boards with a cloth to condition and protect the wood.
A few drops on the blade and hinge after cleaning, and every one of my Opinels still opens smooth as the day I bought them. Food-safe is a big plus for me since I use mine in the kitchen constantly.
Works nicely on carbon blades and the wooden handle of my No.8. Only complaint is you go through it faster than expected if you maintain a small collection, but at $10 it's easy to reorder.
Great stuff.
I carry a carbon steel Opinel every day for work around the farm, and before I started oiling it I'd get light surface rust within a week, especially in humid weather. Since using this oil, I haven't seen a single spot. It wipes on thin, doesn't leave a greasy feel, and I don't worry about it transferring to food since it's plant-based and food-safe. I've even used it on my walnut cutting board and it brought back some of the color. For ten bucks this is honestly a no-brainer for anyone with carbon knives or wood-handled tools.
It's an okay oil. Does what it says on blades and handles, though I think mineral oil works just as well for cheaper. No regrets, just not amazed.
Been collecting folders for thirty years and I've tried them all. This one is thin enough to wick into the pivot without gumming it up, which is where most oils fail. Smells faintly plant-like, nothing harsh. Wish the applicator were a bit more precise, but I just use a cotton swab.
The beech wood on my No.12 was getting dry and pale after washing. Two coats of this and the grain darkened beautifully and feels nourished again. Bonus that it works on blades too.
Can't speak to the oil itself since half of it leaked out in the box. Cutter's Bench did offer a replacement, so hopefully that one seals properly. Rating reflects the condition it arrived in.
I maintain the knives my kids use for whittling, and knowing this oil is food-safe means I'm not nervous about residue. It also keeps the Virobloc ring turning freely. Simple product, does exactly what it promises.
Got this along with code BENCH10 so the price was right. Used it on blades, pivots, and an olive wood cutting board, all with good results. The oil is a bit runny so apply carefully. Would buy again.
