Bruno Chaperon, a French woodworker of 25+ years trained at the famous Arts Décoratifs and Beaux-Arts de Paris, developed and patented the intricate sinusoidal marquetry design on this knife. Every handle is made by hand in Opinel's woodshop, meaning no two knives are identical.
Four kinds of wood form the sinusoidal pattern: Walnut, Rosewood, Wengé, and Ashwood – laminated into flowing waves over the classic No.08 body. The stainless steel blade is polished for an elegant finish.
At $62.25 versus $135.00, you're getting a hand-executed, patented marquetry handle – work that would cost far more as standalone craft – wrapped around Opinel's most trusted No.08 platform. Compared to other artist-edition knives at $100–$200+, this discounted price is exceptional value.
Keep the handle dry, avoid prolonged soaking, and occasionally treat the wood with a light coat of wood-safe oil to preserve the luster of the four-wood pattern.

The marquetry handle is jaw-dropping in person. Four woods in a flowing pattern, and no two are alike. It came in a lovely box and I almost don't want to use it. Best-looking knife I own, period.
Handmade quality is obvious the moment you pick it up. Smooth action, razor blade, gorgeous handle.
The sinusoidal marquetry is unlike anything else on the market — my wife immediately ordered one too. Blade is typical excellent Opinel stainless. One caution: the inlaid woods can scratch if you carry it with keys, so I keep it in a separate pocket.
No doubt this is a gorgeous knife and the craftsmanship in the handle is real. But at this price I expected flawless edges on the inlay, and mine has a slight lip where two woods meet. Function is perfect; just a small quality-control wobble on a premium piece.
My husband gave me this for our anniversary and it's the most beautiful thing I've ever held, let alone a knife. I use it for cheese and picnics and feel fancy every single time.
I've admired Bruno Chaperon's work since seeing it at a knife show in Paris years ago, so finding his Opinel collaboration at this price was a no-brainer. The patented marquetry technique really does create that wave effect perfectly. The No.08 size is ideal for both pocket carry and light kitchen use. Every detail, from the polished blade to the Virobloc collar, speaks of care.
Bought this for my dad who's collected Opinels for decades and even he was impressed by the handle work. Shipping was quick and the presentation box makes it gift-ready. The blade action was a little stiff at first but loosened nicely after a week.
Unfortunately mine arrived with a small chip on one edge of the inlaid handle. The blade and mechanism were flawless, but for a handmade art knife I can't overlook it. Cutter's Bench offered an exchange, so I'll update my review if the replacement is clean.
Opens buttery smooth and the lockup is rock solid. The handle pattern gets compliments every time I pull it out at camp.
I'm a woodworker myself, so I scrutinize joinery hard, and this marquetry holds up to inspection. The sinusoidal pattern is seamless where it matters and the finish is silky. It's become my everyday carry for gentler days and my favorite conversation piece at scout meetings. Ten out of ten, would buy again as a gift.
