First make sure the Virobloc ring is rotated fully open — a locked ring blocks the blade. Then apply a drop of food-safe oil or beeswax to the blade groove and work the blade several times. If the beechwood handle is swollen from humidity, let the knife dry in a dry room for a day or two; it will loosen as the wood contracts.
Grip the knife by the handle, hold the fixed collar section, and twist the sliding ring gently. If it binds, a drop of oil at the ring's seam and a few rotations will free it. Never force the blade open against a locked ring.

Beechwood absorbs moisture and expands. Hand wash only, never soak, and dry immediately. If it's already swollen, air-dry the knife away from direct heat; the wood will contract and the blade action will return.
My first Opinel was a gift forty years ago and this new one is every bit as good. Sharp, light, and the Virobloc lock works as intended. The sheath is a nice bonus at this price.

No complaints about the blade. The sheath is a bit loose though and the knife can slide out if you carry it upside down. Fine for belt carry.
