I've owned a lot of folders over thirty years of gardening and camping, and this No. 12 might be my favorite. The beechwood handle has warmed and darkened nicely with use. It sharpens up easily on a stone and the blade geometry is perfect for peel work. Bought two more as gifts.
The lock ring takes a week or two to feel natural, but once you have the motion down it's quick and reliable. Big enough for camp kitchen duty without being unwieldy. Wish the handle were slightly more contoured, but that's the Opinel design and I knew that going in.

Out of the box the pivot was very tight and the lock ring took real effort to turn. After some oil and a few dozen opens it's smoothing out nicely. The steel is genuinely excellent — no complaints there. Three stars for the break-in period; may revise upward.
There's something lovely about a design that hasn't needed changing in a century. The No. 12 is the sweet spot size for me — big enough for food prep at camp, still pocketable. The beech smells faintly sweet when you open it. Simple, honest tool.
Used it to slice tomatoes at a picnic and then trim kindling the same weekend. Held its edge through both. The blade is thin, which is great for cutting but means you shouldn't pry with it — it's a cutter, not a pry bar. Happy overall.
The edge grind on mine was noticeably uneven, one side higher than the other, and it pulled to the left when slicing cardboard. Customer service handled it fine and I'll admit the replacement may be better, but quality control on this unit let me down. Rating the experience, not the design, which I otherwise like.
