My 9-year-old took this to his first scout campout and came back having used every feature — the knife for fuzz sticks, the whistle for (annoying) signaling games, the shackle key for his gear. The knife, whistle, and shackle combo is clearly designed by people who understand what kids actually do outdoors. Blade is safe-tipped but still cuts wood and food fine. My only wish is a slightly larger lanyard hole for thicker paracord. Still an easy five-star product in a four-star review world — minor nitpick.
Camping, fishing, the backyard fort — this knife goes. The whistle has been 'tested' approximately four hundred times, so heads up on that. Quality is excellent for fifteen dollars and the safety tip means I'm comfortable with him using it semi-supervised.
The knife portion is great — proper steel, safe tip, easy lock. But the whistle on ours is inconsistent; sometimes it blows loud and clear, sometimes it produces a weak trill. Maybe moisture gets in it. I'd buy again for the knife, but don't count on the whistle as your only emergency signal.
My son and daughter each got one for our national park trip. The different colors prevented all ownership disputes, which any parent knows is worth the price alone. Both knives have survived being dropped on rocks, used as tent-stake tappers (sigh), and a river dunking. Indestructible so far.

I appreciate the concept, but my 7-year-old simply cannot open or close this knife without adult help — the Virobloc requires more torque than small hands can manage. If the point is teaching independence, this misses it for younger kids. Older children may be fine. Build quality itself was good.
