I've collected Opinels and Japanese blades for years and never expected to see them united like this. The blacksmith's influence shows in every detail — the forge texture, the geometry, the way the edge was finished. It's still recognizably an Opinel in form, but the blade is on another level entirely. At this price for a limited collaboration, it's a gift to the collecting community. Number 087 of 500 sits proudly on my shelf, though it cuts too well to stay there.
Waited for the restock and grabbed one for myself and one for my best friend. The blade finish is stunning — hammer marks you can feel — and the edge came frighteningly sharp. He nearly cried. Worth every cent of the $97.
Genuinely special. The collaboration quality shows.
The blade work is exceptional and the forge marks are gorgeous. My only critique is that the pivot was quite stiff out of the box and needed a few days of use plus a drop of oil to smooth out. Once broken in, it's flawless. Docking one star for the break-in period.
I hesitated at nearly $100 for an Opinel but the Shiori justifies itself the moment you hold it. The blade is noticeably thicker and more substantial than a standard No.10, and the grind is a thing of beauty. My father, a retired machinist, inspected it and declared it 'properly made' — high praise from him. I'll be storing this one carefully for the grandkids.
It's a well-made knife and the collaboration story is cool, but at this price I expected perhaps a nicer handle or a presentation case. The blade is excellent; the rest is standard Opinel. Good, just not quite the wow factor for me.
My son is a knife enthusiast and I surprised him with this for his 30th. He was speechless — he'd been following the collaboration online and thought he'd missed his chance. The blade is a work of art and he carries it on special occasions only. Thank you Cutter's Bench for the easy ordering and fast shipping.
