Grip the chestnut flat-side down, extend the Virobloc-locked blade, and cut a shallow X or single slit across the domed shell – just deep enough to pierce the shell without cutting the nut. Scored chestnuts roast or boil without bursting. The short, sturdy snub-nose blade gives you the control shallow scoring demands.
Scoring and peeling chestnuts, removing pits from apricots and plums, peeling garlic cloves, opening boxes, and fine whittling of small, intricate wood designs.
Yes – the short drop point blade is precise and agile, making it an effective small whittling and detail-carving knife.
Hand wash only, air dry, and never soak or dishwash. Occasionally wipe with a light food-safe wood oil to keep the chestnut from drying out. The 12C27 stainless blade is low-maintenance and corrosion-resistant.
Compared to larger Opinel folders (No. 08+), the No. 07 is shorter and more precise for detail food work. Versus dedicated chestnut knives, this one adds garlic, pit-removal, and whittling versatility at a fraction of the cost.

Bought it for scoring chestnuts before roasting and it does that perfectly, but it's become my everyday pocket companion for garlic, apples, and whittling by the fire. The chestnut wood handle is smooth and smells lovely. The Virobloc lock feels reassuring. Classic French design at a silly low price.
Fits in my pocket, locks solid, and takes a fine edge. Great gift.
The blade came sharp and the wooden handle has real character. Opening the collar takes a little practice at first. For ten bucks it's honestly unbeatable, I keep it in my car for spontaneous picnic duty.
My grandfather carried an Opinel in France and I wanted to try one myself. This No. 07 is exactly the right size for peeling garlic and trimming vegetables. The stainless steel hasn't spotted despite my admittedly careless habit of leaving it wet. It's light as a feather. Grandpa would approve.
The rotating lock is stiff out of the box and my fingers aren't strong enough to open it easily. Blade quality seems fine and I may work it loose over time, but so far it's frustrating to use daily.
I carry nicer knives but this lives in my work bag for produce and package twine. Holds an edge surprisingly well for the price point. The chestnut handle developed a nice patina after a few weeks.
Lightweight, safe to carry with the lock ring, and sharp enough for food prep at the campsite. Scored a bag of chestnuts over the fire and every one opened clean. Ordered three more as stocking stuffers.
Works fine for garlic and small tasks. I misjudged the 1.5-inch blade for bigger jobs like whittling spoons, where it feels a bit small. Check the dimensions before buying. Still a charming little knife for the money.
No fancy frills, just a sharp blade and a beautiful handle. The lock actually locks. I've owned three Opinels and this one's finish is the nicest yet. Cutter's Bench shipped it fast in proper packaging.
